Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and result in vision loss and even blindness.  Early treatment in glaucoma can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss.

The optic nerve is a bundle of a million nerve fibers that connects the eye to the brain.  The most common form of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, is associated with increased fluid pressure inside the eye, which may cause damage to the optic nerve and lead to severe vision loss if left untreated.

Not everyone with elevated pressure inside the eye develops glaucoma but some people develop glaucoma with normal pressures.  When the eye pressure is too high for a particular optic nerve then glaucoma develops.

Glaucoma is most common in those over age 40, but those at increased risk are people with family history of glaucoma, African Americans over age 40 and Hispanics over age 60.

For open-angle glaucoma there are no symptoms at first of any vision loss.  If left untreated, often peripheral or side vision loss slowly begins to deteriorate then advancing to central vision loss that could eventually lead to blindness.

At present glaucoma cannot be prevented but if detected and treated early it can be controlled very effectively.  Medication eye drops and/or surgery (laser or conventional) can slow progression of glaucoma considerably to prevent further vision loss.

Glaucoma is detected through a comprehensive eye examination.  For those with increased risk of glaucoma it is especially important to get a comprehensive eye examination as a preventative measure.
